Maria Repnikova (Postdoctoral Fellow, Project for Advanced Research in Global Communication, University of Pennsylvania) outlines the relations between China’s critical journalists and the party-state in the past decade. She explains how critical journalists who investigate contentious issues manage to coexist with an authoritarian political system through various acts of guarded improvisation.
