Andrew Farnsworth, B.S. '95, Ph.D. '07, is a research associate in the Information Science Program at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. His current research efforts advance our use and application of rapidly expanding technologies available for studying bird movements at very small to very large scales including weather surveillance radar, acoustic monitoring, video monitoring and citizen science.
"Birds are an amazingly salient feature of Manhattan life. Literally millions pass unseen overhead on certain migration nights. The city's green spaces provide helpful food resources for refueling, but its buildings and light pollution pose serious threats. Educating people about these challenges gives us many unique opportunities to put scientific research into conservation action," says Farnsworth.
