In support of the the 2013 New Student Reading Project, Johnson Museum staff members examine original artworks from around the museum to help readers think more deeply about Julie Otsuka's internment novel "When the Emperor Was Divine."
Among the works presented are: paintings and prints by Roger Shimomura, whose art addresses his family's experience at Minidoka Relocation Center; artifacts and ephemera from Minidoka and other relocation centers; works of art from the Museum's outstanding permanent collection of Asian art; and pieces from a special exhibition "Encountering the Floating World: Ukiyo-e and the West."
